In a wide variety of industrial automation applications, they use laser sensors. Applications of these sensors include detection, measurement, and positioning. The benefits of laser light are universal across all laser sensors, regardless of the manufacturer. Additionally, the high intensity of the light enables precise measurements, positioning, and detection. By employing light as a medium, quick measurement speeds are possible.

The following are three types of laser light-based sensors:

Laser-based distance sensors

It is possible to measure distances over long distances using laser distance sensors. These sensors operate on the Time-Of-Flight principle, which involves emitting a laser beam and collecting the reflected light from that beam. Due to the delay between the source and the receiver of the laser light, the laser distance sensor can calculate the distance between itself and the source of the laser light. Each series has a unique maximum measurement distance.

Displacement laser sensors

With these sensors, it is not so much about measuring distances as it is about detecting objects and/or people within a specified range. The L-LAS-LT-130-SL is a capacitive laser proximity sensor that measures between 50 and 210 mm. The sensor sends out a laser beam and detects its reflection to determine whether or not an object has been detected.

Laser projectors

A target surface can be illuminated with a laser beam using this type of laser acceleration sensor. Margin and dimension calculations can be performed using the projection, depending on the application. An entire article could be devoted to describing how the laser projector works and the applications for which it is suitable.

For instance, the laser projector applies to a wide variety of industries, including automotive and textile. The Audi R8's body, for example, was constructed using a Z-Laser ZLP1 laser projector. Lasers can be used for positioning to ensure that components are properly attached.
