During the construction of any new structure, you will sooner or later have to iron out some key details of how it will all hold together. Those little things that give buildings, houses, and other setups its form and longevity? They’re called fasteners. Items like bolts, nuts, and screws are the unsung heroes of construction and engineering, and they serve many purposes.
What is a fastener?
A fastener is a piece of hardware that joins two parts together. They are usually small pieces of shaped metal that affixes one material to another. Most often than not, they are used instead of more permanent methods of joining, like welding or gluing, because of a few reasons: one, the attachment is supposedly removable, or two, the fasteners’ acts as part of a movable or hinged joint. There are some notable exceptions to this, like captive fasteners, but generally, fasteners are not permanent.
Choosing screws
Screws are one of the most used fasteners. They used to be pretty simple-- Phillips head or flat head-- but now, the technology that goes into fasteners have advanced it quite a bit. There are now several types of screws for almost every purpose-- so how can you tell which is the right one?
Tips on how to pick out the right screw
Given that there is quite a lot of screws in the market right now, how can you tell which is the right one to choose? Here are a few tips you can use to make the search easier.
1. Material. Screws can be made of many different materials, from zinc to iron to even plastic. Determine what kind of function it will serve: extreme temperature environments? Outdoor use?
2. Size. How big does your screw need to be? They come in many lengths.
3. Head of the screw. Screwdrivers used to be the popular way of attaching screws, but now there are power tools you can use for them. Some screws can better handle them than others.
