Visiting a senior daycare centre in Singapore can be a very fulfilling task. Seeing the elders, talking to them, and letting them know they are not forgotten or neglected is a good deed and more often than not, as rewarding for us as it was for them. When we want to make the elders happy on our visit, the most common thing we think about is to bring them gifts, and that is where most complexities start.

What kind of gift will make the elders happy anyway? Should you give them expensive gifts? Or common door gifts? Will gifting hygiene supply works? These many questions will run in your mind when you have to give gifts to the folks in an elderly care centre. Hence, we put together these gift ideas to help you with your mission.

Hobby supplies

Elders used to spend their time working when they are younger. Now that they retire, it is not very easy to get used to not being busy. You can help them by giving out kits containing supplies for hobbies. Elders love to knit, solve puzzles, paint, read books, and other hobbies that will effectively consume their time. Try to consider this type of gift which they will surely appreciate.

Board games

Believe it or not, most elders in daycare centres enjoy board games. It can be rooted in keeping their minds sharp as they age or maybe just a way to pass time. While some of the elders do love to participate in the games, some are happy to watch their comrades in a match. Thus, giving out board games will serve as an interactive gift that everyone can enjoy.

Blankets or scarves

Remember when your mother would wrap a scarf around your neck? That gesture is supposed to entail protection. This is why when you give a scarf or blanket to an elder, he/she would appreciate it well. It symbolizes your thoughtfulness and cares for them during their aged years.

Your presence

Sometimes, the perfect gift is not a tangible thing. In our experience in providing rehabilitation for the elderly, we understand that the elders enjoy company more than they enjoy tangible gifts. Consider spending time with them. Tell them stories and listen to their own. This way, they will have a more worthwhile time with someone they can talk to.
