I never knew, listening to my grandfather’s stories, would lead me to love scale model making. Yes, even I cannot believe what had happened, and to why I ended up loving and building models as my hobby.

Because as far as I can remember, I was not old enough to build things. In fact, I was two and a half years old, when my grandfather bought me a popsicle stick. He then told me about a story of a boy, who accidentally invented this popsicle I am eating. This boy, he said, left a cup filled with powdered soda water, and stirring stick, behind their porch overnight, and that’s the beginning of how this popsicle stick became a trend.

Back then, I couldn't understand why he was telling me this story, but as I grew older, he explained that he was too, was surprised, and couldn’t believe that the popsicle sticks he was using for scale model making have this kind of history.

But then again, it didn’t stop him nor his love for building models, because whenever I am spending my summer holidays over their house, he always teaches me everything he knows and love about this hobby. Here let me share with you my journey on how I become a model maker enthusiast here in Singapore.

His Hobby Later Became Mine

Okay, to begin with, after spending my summer holidays over my grandparents’ house, I slowly realise that my grandfather’s hobby has become my hobby. I didn’t realise listening to his stories, and following what he did, would make me love building models. But it did, and after so many years since he passed away, I am still here in his work area, making the last model ship building he was supposed to send it to me as his gift on my wedding day.

Sadly, he didn’t make it, because five years ago, prostate cancer took him away after six long months of chemotherapy and treatment. And on the day of his funeral, my grandmother handed me a letter, and it was from my grandfather. He was thanking me for being there, supporting his hobby, and he was sorry he can no longer finish the model ship he was building, and on the last part of his letter, he there told that he left a blueprint on how to finish the last model ship he was building.

Finishing His Last Model Ship Building…

I tried finishing his last model ship building, but my scale model making still wasn’t enough to finish it. With that said, I knew I had to do something, and experimenting with his model ship building isn’t an option for me. That’s why I went to seek alternative ways instead because as far as my research goes, I will be wasting a considerable amount of time before I can finish it. And there will be no guarantee if the result would be as beautiful as his building models.

With that said, I search online, if there are any experts; a model maker here in Singapore that can help create an iconic art with my grandfather's last model ship building.  And thankfully, after hours, I finally found a model maker that I am looking for, and there are only a few blocks away from my residence.

Working with This Model Maker in Singapore

Working with this model maker wasn't as hard as you think, because they always provide me options on what I think is the best, and they never forget to update me about what their progress is.  Also, they even send me pictures to see the quality of their work.

Honestly, I have nothing much more to say, aside from how fascinating they are, and how pleasing their services are. Because for the past week working with them, what they showed to me was real professionalism, and they even advised me how to improve my scale model making skills.

Finished! My Grandfather’s Memento Is Ready

Yes, time flies within seconds. I didn’t realise they already finished my grandfather’s memento. The model ship building I asked them to make was splendidly well done. Because, back when I was trying to finish it, I made a lot of mistakes and errors that almost ruined the model ship building, but thankfully it did not.

And what I am most glad about this model maker here in Singapore was they made a replica of what's on my grandfather’s blueprint. And they didn’t ruin the original piece, but they did finish it with the same material as my grandfather always uses; popsicle sticks!

So, if you are having trouble with your scale model making skills, then, visit a model maker near you in Singapore! I recommend AE Models for a quick and convenient way to make building models. Their model maker will attend your needs as soon as enquire for their scale model making services.
